Just who are those lucky people who get to stay in an elegant two-room suite in the Beverly Hills Hotel?

Playwright Neil Simon attempts to answer that question in his playlets featuring six different couples who stay there and reveal that they may not be that lucky after all. The 1976 comedy explores the range of human relationships that bind people together while grappling with the mature themes of adultery, homosexuality and divorce.

In the production of California Suite that opens on Friday, November 13 and plays through the weekend, members of the Cornwall Central High School Drama Club do a great job portraying the comedy and the pathos of the characters whose lives turn out to be less than what they hoped.

In the first playlet, a sophisticated divorced couple from New York argue over which parent should keep their 17-year-old daughter. The jabs and snipes are delivered by actor Amy Lindland, a senior, and received by her laid-back husband, played by another senior, Dan Parrette.

A British couple take over Suite 203 & 204 in the next playlet. The woman, an actress nominated for an Academy Award, cannot contain her nervousness about the awards ceremony later that evening while she quizzes her husband, an antiques dealer, about his dalliances back home in London during the day. The morning after the awards ceremony, the actress, played by Lindsay Roblesi, and her husband, played by Patrick Hoagland, still find comfort in one another despite their disappointments.

A man from Philadelphia wakes up in the third playlet to find a strange woman sleeping in his bed, an empty vodka bottle on the table and his wife knocking at the door. Brien Schweizer plays Marvin Michaels, who tries desperately to hide evidence of his philandering when Millie, played by Brigid Doulin, shows up to join him for a bar mitzvah to be held later that day.

Two couples are the last occupants of the suite whom we meet as they are wrapping up a vacation and decide to have some fun on the tennis court. The match gives way to animosity and the four friends see their friendship dissolve before their eyes. David Ransbottom, Emily Zwart, Shona Ford and Matt Begbie play the once-happy couples in this playlet.

California Suite is directed by Rich Auferio with technical director Tony Ravinsky, who also oversaw the dedicated stage and lighting crews. Dozens of other students, and their talented parents, put hours of efforts into the performance, which opens this Friday at 7 pm at the high school. Tickets are available at the door.
