Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Mike Kelly made it to the finish line in the New York City Marathon on Sunday after completing the 26.2 mile race in six hours and two minutes. But he crossed the finish line without either of his two daughters who, a year ago, had proposed the idea of running in the marathon to raise money for Parkinson’s disease research.

Mary Kelly had dropped out of training much earlier this year after suffering an injury, leading Mike to step in and take her place. (Read their personal story here.) Daughter Jennie, new to running, became an enthusiastic trainer over the past year but at mile 13 in Sunday’s marathon, a knee injury forced her to stop, according to her mother, Ellen.

More than $6,000 was raised for the Team Fox Parkinson program by the Kellys’ efforts. Mike’s wife Ellen said that a total of $700,000 will go to the research foundation. She also noted that Mike’s performance was “awesome.”

Marine Corps Marathon Finishers

The previous weekend, four local runners with ties to West Point ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. (Read about them here.)

Deric Milligan sent in their finishing times:

Bill Cuthbert, West Point: 2:56:14 (106 out of 20,936 finishers)
Lisa Duscio, Cornwall on Hudson: 4:57:37
Deric Milligan, Cornwall on Hudson: 4:44:51
Lois Hicks-Wozniak, West Point: 4:46:16

Ellen Bourhis Nolan, a veteran marathoner and resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson, also ran in the Marine Corp run.  Her time 4:42:07!
