A growing number of people in Cornwall – and across the globe – are becoming aware of the small steps they can take to stop the climate changes that scientists say are melting the polar ice cap and endangering the future of planet earth. That’s why on Saturday, October 24, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide will join in an unparalleled international day of action designed to send a message to world leaders to tackle these issues.

In order to amplify their message, supporters of the day of action organized by the 350 movement are encouraging groups to hold community events to raise awareness. Each group is asked to take a photo symbolizing the number 350 and these photos will be shown worldwide, including on the giant screen in New York’s Times Square. (Why 350?  That's what scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.)

Steps for Change at the Nature Museum

In Cornwall, the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum is distributing forms where people can pledge to take simple steps to reduce carbon emissions – from unplugging phone chargers to bringing reusable bags to the grocery store. Museum executive director Jackie Grant says the museum hopes to collect 350 pledges by next Saturday, when the museum will hold a morning program with music, animals and crafts for kids to mark the day. People will be asked to show their support for efforts to slow climate change by joining a group photo at 11 a.m. that will be sent to 350.org. (Download the pledge form below and send it in to the museum.)

Cornwall Clean Up by the Environmental Club

At Cornwall High School, members of the environmental club have been working with their teacher Eva Whorley and Marja Hazirjian, a community member who supports 350, to spread the word about climate change and to clean up Cornwall at the same time. Club president Alex Ellick says that the students plan to sweep through Cornwall’s town park and adjoining streets on Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m., where they will pick up trash and put it into orange bags. These bags will be brought out to the high school for a photo shoot at 10:24 a.m. sharp.

Tree Planting and Harvest Market Celebration

The Cornwall Community Cooperative is also celebrating its first year of bringing fresh, locally grown produce to the community. Buying local food is one of the keys to reducing carbon emissions and on Saturday, the public is invited to tour the co-op’s new Harvest Market and taste just how good local foods can be.

The Cornwall Conservation Advisory Committee has also scheduled the annual Dolce Dorfman Community Spirit Day on Sunday when a Kwanzan cherry tree will be planted at Cornwall Town Hall at 1 p.m.
