The Riverfront Revitalization Committee is looking for village residents who have an opinion about Donahue Memorial Park and adjoining village-owned land. Judging from the level of debate during the spring and summer, there is no shortage of points of view on this subject. Now, starting this Wednesday at 7 p.m. the Riverfront committee is inviting everyone in the village to bring their thoughts and ideas to a series of three public meetings to discuss where to go from here. (see event calendar)
John Wenz, the head of the committee, is hoping for a consensus from residents about what changes, if any, should be implemented to enhance public enjoyment of the scenic waterfront.
“Over the last six months we have heard a lot of suggestions, complaints, and observations,” Wenz says, “and we hope that all members of our community will come to speak their minds about the waterfront at these hearings."
The riverside park has been underutilized according to some residents, while others seek out the solitude that can be found along the riverbank.
In June, the Master Plan Committee released its broad proposals for the waterfront, envisioning a historical “Mary Powell” dock where tour boats could drop off passengers.
The committee also called for the immediate rehabilitation of the boat launch, and the installation of toilet facilities. A vision of a greenway, incorporating undeveloped village-owned land and land that could be reclaimed from the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, was presented as part of the committee’s vision. (read Master Plan Proposals here).
Access to parking has been an ongoing issue at the waterfront, where police regularly hand out tickets for cars parked without a village permit. The new gazebo at the north end of Donahue Park was dedicated in July to former deputy mayor Tony Ferraro and soon became a location for wedding party photo shoots.
At the public hearings, John Wenz says the Riverfront Revitalization Committee wants to listen to what people in the village think about the waterfront. Wenz notes that the river will be a focal point of activities celebrating the 400th anniversary of Hentry Hudson’s sail up the waterway in 1609 and that there is an opportunity for the village to be part of the celebration if action starts soon.
“Once it has been established that a consensus exists to make changes and/or improvements, our responsibility will be to see those through,” Wenz says, referring to the committee that was appointed by the mayor. “Should we determine that the majority feels that our waterfront cannot possibly improve our quality of life any more than it already does, and nothing should be done, we will then disband this committee.”
Wenz, a marine surveyor and dedicated boater, has offered his own vision of how to improve access to the waterfront. He has proposed a floating dock system, which you can read about right here.
