Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams bid an emotional farewell on Tuesday evening to the officers who served under him in the village department.

The officers gathered outside police headquarters to give their departing chief a final salute on the last day of his police duty. Williams retired from the police department to take a full time position with the New York Military Academy as the deputy commandant of cadets. On Monday, the village board of trustees appointed Sgt. Paul Weber of the city of Newburgh police department to serve as interim police chief.

Williams spoke about his 18 years in the Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson police departments remembering “the arrests, accident, and things we do every day that people take for granted.”

With an occasional tear in his eye, Williams recalled the transitional moments of his career and said his proudest moment occurred when he was part of a team that saved a guy’s like. “It wasn’t about being a cop,” he said, “it was about caring, being responsible, and caring for one another.”

The officers shared his sentiment and thanked the chief, saluting him one last time as he walked past them to say goodbye.

Comments:

The village lost a great asset today. Mike and I wish him the best in his new career at NYMA.
