September 11, 2009

A group of about 75 people assembled at Chadeayne Circle under grey clouds on Friday evening to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack eight years ago on September 11, 2001. They were joined by members of the local fire and police departments and the Cornwall ambulance service in a somber ceremony at the granite memorial that honors all first responders in the area. A brilliant bouquet of two dozen yellow roses cast the only light on the somber scene.

Maryanne Rose O’Dell, the president of the Cornwall Historical Society, welcomed those people who gather each year to keep alive the memory of the 3,000 people who perished that day, including Kenneth Kumpel, a New York City firefighter and Cornwall resident, who was one of hundreds of rescuers killed in the World Trade Center attack.

Reverend Thomas Margrave, of St. John’s Episcopal Church, noted that the events of that day in 2001 “changed the sense of American security forever.” Outgoing Orange County legislator Alan Seidman noted that even today not all the terrorists involved in planning the attack have been brought to justice. In an act that spoke to the unprecedented sense of unity that many Americans felt after the terrorist attack on U.S. soil, Ken Cashman of the Cornwall Local led the crowd to sing “God Bless America.”

Each of the emergency responders present laid a wreath on the 9-11 memorial bench, guns were fired in honor of those deceased and Abby Mayer played ‘Taps” on his bugle, bringing the quiet ceremony to an end.
