Visitors to the 37th annual Fall Festival on Main Street in Cornwall on Saturday will find more of a hometown touch than in recent years. Festival organizers from the Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce said they wanted to return to the roots of the daylong celebration when merchants first brought racks of goods from their stores onto the sidewalk. That’s why when you stroll Main Street you will see more familiar faces among the vendors who want you to stop and sample their wares.

Randy Clark, whose financial services business is located on the corner of Main and Bridge Streets says that although the original stores – Ushman’s hardware and Edgar’s boutique are gone, new stores are picking up the spirit from those years.

At the corner of Willow Avenue and Main Street, local bands will be setting up on a flatbed truck to entertain the crowds all day long outside of Madison Avenue, a children’s clothing store and photography studio run by Karen Kaiser Sharp. Around the corner on Torrey Lane, Bill Diamond will be performing with his cast of Dr. Rock's Dinosaur Adventure Puppet Show on a stage outside of the BBE Designs. Meanwhile, at Bridge Street, you will find a rocking DJ, a ballroom dancing demonstration and other performances throughout the day. You’ll also have to go to that stage if you want to take part in the pie-eating contest at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Organizer say that local vendors include jewelers and crafters, the Cornwall food co-op and the new yoga and Nia studios. Fiddlestix Café will be serving food outside, not far from Canterbury Inn, which will be cooking up bratwurst while the Hudson Valley's leading German band, Alpine Squeeze, performs nearby.

An antiques appraiser will set up shop at Chadeayne Circle from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Clark says that anyone can either bring the antique piece or a photo of it to appraiser William Jenack and he will tell you its age, manufacturer and approximate value. The appraisal cost $5 per item (maximum of five items for $20) or $2.50 per photo (maximum of 10 photos for $20).

Clark says that it has been a lot of fun working with the other business people who pitched in this year to organize the Fall Festival instead of subcontracting the job to professionals. “Our goal was to make it more hometown, to bring it back to Cornwall,” he said, “to make it a festival that you really look forward to.”
