An 80-feet oak tree fell across Dock Hill Road Sunday afternoon, about 100 feet in front of a 16-year-old boy who was walking down to the river.

Ben Hinderman said the massive oak sounded like thunder when it fell from the steep slope on the north side of the road.  The tree brought down a section of fiber optic cable and knocked limbs into the stream.

Police officer Michael Lug said he got the call around 3:45 p.m. and closed Dock Hill Road to traffic shortly after.   The Department of Public Works and the utility company were called in to remove the tree.  DPW head Dave Halvorsen said the road re-opened to vehicles around 10 p.m.  He added that clean-up work remained on Monday, including repairing and replacing about 100 feet of guardrail that was damaged in the accident.
