General News: Childhood Inspiration Leads to Major Gift

The Trailside Museum at Bear Mountain State Park has just received a $1 million gift from a man whom no one at the Palisades Park Commission ever knew but who remembered the great impact the park had on him as a child growing up in New York City in the 1920s and 30s.

Park officials say that when Robert J. Drew, of Camano Island, Washington, passed away on December 21, 2008, he bequeathed a portion of his $2 million estate to the Trailside Museums and Zoo.

According to a press release from the park, the visits to Trailside exposed Drew to natural history, live animals, and the important role the area played in the Revolutionary War.   As an adult working in the medical profession, Drew enjoyed hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, cross country skiing and fishing with his wife.  His obituary also describes professional drawings he created of mountaineers and animals.

Park officials note that his generosity will ensure that new generations of children will continue to find inspiration at the nation's first center combining museums, nature trails, and a zoo in one riverfront facility
