It may finally feel like summer here in Cornwall but some heating experts are planning for the winter with their installation of a new boiler this past week at the historic Sands Ring Homestead.

The installation of the new system was a group project undertaken by professionals who volunteered under the coordination of Gerry Wagner, a member of the Cornwall Economic Development Advisory Committee and a heating and air conditioning specialist.

The lack of heat and other structural problems at the 250-year-old Sands Ring Homestead have been targeted by the non-profit organization, Friends of Sands Ring Homestead Museum, which is seeking community support to maintain the historic house.  Wagner is also a member of the museum board of trustees.

Earlier this spring, two boy scouts completed maintenance projects inside and outside the building.

Bruce Perry and his crew of professional plumbers donated a day and a half of their time to install the new boiler.  Gerry Wagner donated the boiler, which retails for nearly $2,000 although he had acquired at cost from a parts supplier who wanted to support the project as well.  He and Perry donated a couple of hundred dollars more in parts needed for the installation.

Wagner is concerned now about a leaky roof in the house where rain is entering through gaps where the vent exits the boiler room.  “This roof condition must be repaired quickly as the rain water will ruin the new boiler,” Wagner said, noting the  boiler is cast iron but the jacket and components parts are steel.

Any member of the public who would like to contribute to the restoration and repair of the Sands-Ring Homestead may visit the website or email www.sandsring.org or contact the organization's president, Sally Stanley, at [email protected].
