General News: Notes from the Village Board Meeting

July 22, 2009

Who’s In Charge?
The newest member of the board of trustees was looking to hold a public official responsible for making sure that a $226,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) is not lost due to inaction.   Trustee Doug Vatter said he was referring to a possible November deadline for the grant that was awarded to stop erosion at Donahue Memorial Park.  The village has not come up with a plan of how to use the grant money after it tossed out an earlier proposal to build a moffia wall that would tear up the riverfront.

Andy Maroney, a member of the riverfront revitalization committee, said his group had not been asked to come up with a proposal for the FEMA money.

“Who do I get up and make fun or when we loose the FEMA grant?” Vatter asked Mayor Gross. “Who’s in charge?”   Mayor Gross promised to contact FEMA and report back to the board of trustees at its next meeting on July 27.

Park Day Passes at Local Businesses?

Visitors to Donahue Memorial Park may find it easier to get a day pass to park their cars at the riverfront in the future.  Trustee Rick Gioia is proposing a plan to let local businesses sell the day passes.  Gioia suggests that if restaurants and stores sell the permits they may end up getting more customers as well.   A sign at the riverfront would let people know where to go to purchase a day pass.

Gioia may have gotten the idea for the day passes while at the very successful River Journey sculpture exhibit that his wife, Barbara, organized. The exhibit has attracted lots of visitors and Gioia likely got a first hand view of the problems they encountered trying to park, even with a couple of spots reserved just for visitors to the exhibit.

Green Your Car Wash
Next time you stop at village hall to get a car wash from any of the groups that hold them periodically, you can rest assured that the volunteer washers will be using biodegradable soap.

The village board of trustees passed an amended resolution on Monday, requiring all the groups who use Village Hall for car washes to use only the environmentally friendly biodegradable soap.

Comments:

I think a day pass is a great idea. I was born and raised in Cornwall and when I come to visit family members I can't drive down to the riverfront and park unless I borrow a car with a parking permit. This would make it so much easier and bring in a little extra money for the village too.

Message to Doug Vatter,

Lets get real here. What's more important a $226,000 FEMA GRANT to COH to stop erosion at Donahue Park or the 2nd half of that boulder we had the Dept of Public Works install in the park. Where are your priorities man? Boulders or Fiscal responsibility?
What a Beautiful boulder. If the shoreline gets washed away we'll still have that beautiful boulder. ;)

Someone is in over his head and hasn't a clue and it's not Doug my friends.

Good Luck, Pat Welch
