General News: Verizon Franchise Hearing Set

July 22, 2009

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson will hold a public hearing on a franchise Verizon is seeking to offer FIOS,  its hi-speed cable, internet and phone service, to village residents.  The hearing has been scheduled for Monday, August 17, at 7:30 p.m.

The town of Cornwall approved a Verizon FIOS franchise earlier this spring.  The village board has been delaying the move until Verizon moved switching boxes and old poles that it believed were eyesores.   On Monday, board members agreed that the clean-up work was moving along smoothly enough to hold the public hearing.

Comments:

I don't buy it!
The only reason we don't have FIOS in COH is someone in COH is on the Time Warner pay off schedule. Let's try some more public fairness and less GREED!

Wow, Jonathan. I'm surprised to hear this from you. The board realizes that many village residents would enjoy the choice to subscribe to FIOS. However, there is unfinished business with prior Verizon projects, and until those items are rectified we will not give them the go-ahead with another new initiative. I'm personally offended that you would insinuate that there is material gain at stake. Opportunities to call large corporations to account are rare, indeed. This will be resolved soon, so please be patient and remember that we are your neighbors... unlike Verizon management, or any other corporate management.

Not sure I understand the reason for the Verizon hearing, unless for unfinished business on our side?

I've had FIOS here in the village for about a year and access internet and phone thru it. What we don't have is TV service thru FIOS. It was a no-brainer for me to signup for the three package (phone, cable/tv and dump my DSL line) but we have only gotten two of three services offered and am still paying DirecTV over $90 a month.

This should have been approved before for all three and get this done ONCE without having the phone company go thru my house again to setup their boxes. FIOS took the better part of half a day to setup here.

I would like that when approved or finalized, the two year fixed price we signed up for on three services is extended as two years from now , as we have only been getting two.

I also host a free internet access point in the village on my FIOS network, 'C-on-H' is the SSID.

Verizon has withdrawn it's petition for Confirmation of a cable franchise in the town. The petition was originally submitted on 6/11/09. The environmental assessment form was submitted on 7/10/09. Then, mysteriously, the petition was completely withdrawn on 7/15/09.

In other words... no FiosTV in Cornwall unless Verizon drafts a new petition at some point in the future.

Why??? Why seek a franchise in the village while simultaneously pulling approval and future service in the town?
