Cornwall high school student David Martino is learning a lesson in global relationships as he works with a group of teens at Temple Beth Jacob in Newburgh to send assistance to Israeli teens who are damaged by the stresses of war.

Most stereotypical teenagers like to spend as many mornings sleeping late as possible, oblivious to the surrounding world.  But, according to Gail Oliver of the temple, 25 dedicated children awake many mornings help the “Kids for Kids’” annual efforts in raising money for the “Teen Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

Missile attacks from Gaza and the recent war have forced many children in Israel to cope with sleepless nights of nightmares, anxiety, and depression. With the united efforts of Kids for Kids and the teen volunteers, including the event’s young co-chairs: David Martino, Jessica Hoffner, Joshua Hoffner, Hannah Gross, and Matthew Lustbader, Israel’s youth is one step closer to peaceful sleep.

Stuffing envelopes and consistently thinking of the bigger picture, David Martino explained his motivation. "This is my fourth year co-chairing and it never gets old,” he said. ”This year we decided to help kids suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It was nice to help out those suffering from the psychological burdens that the bombings caused."

Oliver says that any who would like to help those suffering can make a donation to Hadassah c/o Matthew Lustbader, 3 Baltas Road, Newburgh, NY 12550. If contributions are sent in honor or memory of someone, an acknowledgement letter will be sent, she adds.
