General News: Town Opposes Reduction in Hospital Beds

July 08, 2009

The Cornwall town board is gearing up to criticize a move by St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital to shut down its intensive care unit and to reduce the number of beds at the Cornwall campus later this month.

Hospital spokeswoman Judi Stokes said the move, which will result in the elimination of 11 positions, reflects a refocus of the hospital from inpatient to outpatient services.  She also said the ICU beds duplicate a service available at the Newburgh branch of the hospital. (See story)  The reduction is scheduled to take place at the end of July.

Councilmember Al Mazzocca suggested at the town board meeting on Monday that the board should let the hospital know that it is “absolutely against taking the intensive care unit and the beds out of the hospital.”

All the board members agreed with Mazzocca and they asked the town’s lawyer to draft a statement for discussion at next Monday’s meeting.

Judi Stokes, the spokesperson for the hospital, said she could not comment on the board's planned action until she sees its final statement.

Comments:

When the merger took place with St.Lukes, all they wanted was the name and not the Hospital, needed to seal the deal, slowly losing our hospital and it will be shutdown, OUR LOSS, St. Lukes Gain!!!!!
