The Cornwall Central Middle School eighth grade class held its Moving Up ceremony on Wednesday, June 24, inside the school’s gymnasium after a rain storm threatened the crowd that had gathered outside earlier in the evening.

After parents, friends and other family members re-assembled in the gymnasium the students proceeded inside for the ceremony that lasted nearly 90 minutes.

Graduating eighth-grader John Hines sang the Star Spangled Banner then passed the microphone to assembled school administrators including principal Diana Musich and school superintendent Timothy Rehm, who put aside three sheets of paper with his prepared speech, noting that the heat of the gymnasium favored brevity.   Peter Brandt, who is retiring after teaching sixth grade for 39 years in Cornwall, also addressed the students, speaking with humor and optimism.

Two students, Rebecca Nissen and Katherine Mollahan, read their essays about their experience at Cornwall Central Middle School and about what they expect in the coming years, followed by a selection by the 8th grade Select Chorus.

Students were then honored with special awards for excellence in different subject areas and performing arts.   This year, the family of Stephanie Rose presented awards in honor of their daughter, a member of the graduating class who passed away in 2008.  Four students received the Stephanie Rose award for demonstrating personal strength, determination and a positve demeanor.

When the last award had been handed out and each of the graduating students had filed to the front of the room to be recognized for finishing eighth grade, a cheer went up among all the students, happy that they could now move up and begin their career in high school.
