General News: Maroneys Chosen as Parade Grand Marshalls

Two longtime residents of Cornwall-on-Hudson have been chosen as this year’s Grand Marshalls for the Cornwall Independence Day Parade on July 4th.

Andy and Jeanne Maroney, both in the 80s, are familiar faces to village residents. Andy was born and raised in Cornwall-on-Hudson and his wife, Jeanne, grew up in Highland Falls. Anyone who has voted in the village knows the couple. Jeanne has been an election inspector for 45 years, verifying voters names outside the booth, and Andy joined her as an inspector 12 years ago.

With a record of civic involvement stretching back decades, Jeanne and Andy are regulars at village board meetings, keeping an eye on projects underway. Mayor Joe Gross appointed Andy to the zoning board of appeals and he is also a member of the village master plan committee and the riverfront revitalization committee, where his recollection of how Cornwall Landing used to be helps guide the group in planning for its future use.

Jeanne says they attend so many meetings because “it’s nice to feel you are part of the fabric of the village.” Reflecting the couple’s modest view of themselves, Andy added “you try to cooperate and help out where you can.”

Helping out is something that Jeanne and Andy are good at. They are both founding members of the Cornwall Historical Society and helped restore the village bandstand and set up the summer concert series. Andy, a World War II Navy veteran, is a past commander of American Legion Post 353 and both he and Jeanne were employed at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where they met more than six decades ago.

The couple just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and live in the house they built in the village at the time of their marriage. They raised a son and daughter in the house.

They had just returned from dinner to celebrate their anniversary earlier this month when the phone rang, with Brendan Coyne, head of the Cornwall Independence Day Committee, on the line to tell them they had been selected as this year’s Grand Marshalls.

“It was quite a surprise,” Andy says about their selection, “and I think it is appropriate given it’s the 400th anniversary of Henry (Hudson) this year.”

Coyne says that the Maroneys were chosen to be this year's parade Grand Marshalls because of all the projects they have worked on over the years. "They embody the sense of community that makes Cornwall a special place,"  Coyne said in a brief telephone interview. "They've been involved in so many elements of our town and village it's just remarkable."

Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing you at the parade. I'll make it a point to put a flag by your mailbox this year on the 4th.
