The former Hudson Street Café is returning to Cornwall-on-Hudson, with new owners and a new chef, Donna Hammond.   The café will be located in the same building where diners have enjoyed the food prepared by Bob King at the Sidewalk Café for the past six years.

Chef Hammond, a former partner in Market-on-Hudson, says that the re-born Hudson Street Café will offer much of the same fare as the Sidewalk Café:  eggs and coffee in the morning and sandwiches, soups and salads at lunchtime.   Hammond, however, will emphasize hormone-free, natural, organic, fair trade and local foods whenever possible when she cooks up her meals.

She plans to bake her own scones, biscuits and foccaccia bread each morning and buy local greens and ice cream. Hammond said that if people want something that is not on the menu,  they should feel free to ask for it.

Hammond says that her goal is to create a place for the community to feel comfortable.  “I think there’s a need for a nice, comfortable hometown spot, with good food that is reasonably priced,” she explained.

A clean-up crew is busy in the restaurant this week, scraping and painting the place for its scheduled opening on Friday, June 12.

Wally and Lucy, who worked behind the counter for Bob King, are staying and the hours, from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., will also be the same.   You’ll also find her partners Will and Kris Waterfield and Ann Pavek, along with their children, working at the new Hudson Street Café.

Better than a Professional Planner. I thought that's why we elected Village officials.

Bob King will be greatly missed! no one could serve food and bantor like Bob! But Donna is a great person and a fabulous cook. She will make you something healthy or unhealthy, all you have to do is ask her! Best of luck to Bob in this new chapter in his life. Donna, I wish you much success and I am thrilled to see you in the village again!

We have great memories of Bob and Sidewalk Cafe. Best was when our daughter was married and Slovenian relatives lodged at Painters walked by and saw us at breakfast in the Cafe and joined us. We took up several tables and had a wonderful, comfortable time. We'll make a trip up to sample Donna's great cooking and rehash our memories.
