General News: Independence Day Funds Needed

The Cornwall Independence Day Committee has begun fund raising to cover the expenses of the celebration Saturday, July 4. The celebration costs nearly $35,000 but this year, due to the economic climate, the committee is tightening its budget.
The fireworks are the biggest expense and this year the committee has budgeted no more than $12,000. The next largest expense is the parade, with bands costing about $7,000. The celebration provides activities and entertainment all day and night at a cost of approximately $5,000. Other expenses include infrastructure to make everything run.
Much of the funding comes through donations from Cornwall residents and businesses. Solicitation letters are being sent and journal ads are being sought; this year people will be able to salute the grand marshal, who will be announced next week.
The committee is running two raffles. One features a prize of two Yankees tickets, courtesy of committee member, Angelo Schembari; raffle tickets are $5 each.
The other features three prizes of dinner for two courtesy of three Cornwall restaurants: the Canterbury Brook Inn, Drew’s on the Square and the River Bank Restaurant; tickets are $1, six for $5. The raffle tickets are courtesy of Quigley Brothers Funeral Home.
The committee is selling a Quadricentennial T-shirt, designed by committee member, Jerry Fink, featuring Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon. The committee will sell loop-a-lites, water and soda on the Fourth and hold a coin drop at dusk. Contact fundraising coordinator Bill Rolon (562-2923) for details.
