General News: Police Arrest Larceny Suspect

May 29, 2009

Police nabbed a teenaged suspect early Wednesday morning in the recent string of larcenies from vehicles in the village and town.

An alert resident of Pine Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson called police shortly after midnight when she spotted a male attempt to enter her husband’s car.  She gave police a description of the suspect and village and town police began canvassing the area.  Within minutes, Cornwall police sergeant Douglas Schofield saw a man who matched that description walking down Academy Avenue.

The unidentified 17-year-old Cornwall youth had nearly $1,500 worth of electronic equipment in his possession that later was identified as stolen from several vehicles in the Homeland area.

The teen was charged by Cornwall-on-Hudson police with five counts of petty larceny and four counts of criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree.  Further investigation by Cornwall police led to two additional charges of petty larceny from vehicles in the town.

Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams says that his department is in possession of one item whose owner is unknown and he asks that individuals who may be missing an item from their vehicle contact the village police.

I'm glad we have a criminal justice system that prevents "lynch mobs" from dispensing their own brand of justice.

Why not let our criminal justice system proceed before a rush to judgement?

In the meantime lets support our Police Department and appreciate the job they do.

Well said MR. Welch!

Don't you think that the victims have a right to know who is breaking into cars and stealing?

Maybe if there was a little more public embarrassment and accountability these things would happen less frequently.

Where'd he get that big screen plasma TV from with no job? Mom and Dad must be oblivious to their minor's activities. Well done neighbors and PD!!
