General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 6

May 26, 2009

GU9
The Lady Tigers lost a hard fought battle at Yorktown Extreme.  The 0-4 result doesn't support the hard work put in by the Tigers.  Erin Dempsey and Nicole Shapiro provided a constant threat on offense, while Taylor Mellon and Brittany Morasse anchored a tough defense that battled hard all day.  Ava Sabini made numerous saves in goal, and kept the Tigers in the match.

GU10
The Scorpions lost a tough physical game to Mahopac 2 - 0.  Sydney Jurgens, Olivia Davet and Brynne Growney with help from Kayla Beckvermit, Amelia Harding and Kate Gleason, kept constant pressure on Mahopac’s goalkeeper, but were unable to get the ball in the net.  Taylor Filippone played an excellent game offensively, beating opponents with her ball handling skills. Samantha Incognoli controlled much of the midfield play while Kelsey Burns played another strong game defensively with help from a hustling Briana Wallace.  Monika Morasse and Hannah Cast, sharing goaltending duties, were terrific.

GU12
The Mahopac Storm and Cornwall Predators battled to a tie in a match for division supremacy. Mahopac struck first going up 2-0 at halftime. Cornwall battled back with Julia Kerr scoring twice assisted by Amanda Cushen and Mariah Hernandez. Solid play by Lisa Weissburg, Christa Sidoti, Kelsey Fosstveit, and Erin Leahy kept the Predators primed for the comeback. Samantha Sabini and Mary Gallo had great performances in goal

GU13-DRAGONFIRE
The Cornwall Dragonfire beat the Mahopac Lightning by a score of 2-1. Kamryn Brown scored the first goal on a beautiful cross from Jillian Artrip. Laura Craig, Alex Jurgens, Joceyln Burns and Ileana Lagrutta did an outstanding job of keeping the Lightning out of shooting range and goalie Cathy Eliasson denied their opportunities to score. The second goal was scored by Erin Hussey on an assist from Kelly Gleason.

GU13-CYCLONES
The Cyclones played the Woodstock Rainbows twice this weekend, dropping both games. Both games were hard-fought, exciting and high scoring affairs.  Cornwall co-captains Alex Steinmann and Rebecca Baumel scored three times each, but that was not enough to stop the prolific Woodstock offense.  Judy Dianis showed remarkable skill on both ends of the field.  Olivia Tellefsen anchored the defense, despite playing injured.

GU15/HS
Team effort was the determining factor in the GU15 Sabre’s 1-0 victory over Rondout Rocks. The girls dominated the game with their exceptional combination plays and impressive foot skills.  The Sabres had some difficulty finding the net offensively, but were able to produce the winning goal in the second half.  Hannah Pogulis successfully carried the ball from the back field and provided a perfectly placed cross in front of the net for Erin Kearns to finish on.  Briana Stadler had a terrific game both offensively and defensively. The defensive unit consisting of Kayla Brewer, Amanda Fasano, Kristen Condosta and Hannah Merlo continued to play strong and compact and limited Rondout to only 3 shots on goal.  Gabby Chamberland earned herself another shutout this season
