General News: Boulder Inscription Approved by Board

The new boulder memorial will be dedicated on June 7th.

Plans are nearly set in stone for the dedication of the boulder that commemorates the 18-year effort to defeat Con Edison’s attempt to build a hydro-electric power station on the side of Storm King Mountain.

On Monday, the Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees approved the wording of an inscription that will be carved into a boulder in the riverfront Donahue Memorial Park.  The split 3-to-2 vote means that plans will go ahead to have the boulder memorial ready for a dedication ceremony on June 7, when the village celebrates Hudson River Day.

No one from the public commented on the memorial, which will be placed next to one honoring former Mayor Michael Donahue, who supported the Con Ed project.  The two memorials are made from halves of the same boulder and as trustee Rick Gioia explained earlier, their placement side-by-side at the riverfront metaphorically bring together the issue that has for so long divided the community.   Trustees Mark Edsall and Doug Vatter opposed the project.

Here’s the inscription that will be carved into the stone:

        To Commemorate the Preservation of
Our Beloved Mountain, Forest and River,
And to Honor Those Whose Stewardship
Inspired and Empowered a Nation to Protect
                     Its Natural Treasures

                 The Storm King Decision
                           1963-1981

Comments:

Bravo!

History was made here, and the inscription appropriately honors those who, like Teddy Roosevelt in his time, had the foresight to recognize irreplaceable natural treasures and the courage to fight to protect them.
