General News: Outlook Good for Village's Summer Camp

May 12, 2009

Plans for the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Summer Playground program are back on track after an examination of Orange County‘s requirement for a series of administrative changes in the program.

Several weeks ago, village trustees Barbara Gosda and Rick Gioia, who oversee the popular youth program, were informed that the playground would be re-classified as a camp and new regulations would have to be imposed. These new requirements included a written schedule of daily activities, a lower child-counselor ratio, and health and safety considerations.

The trustees decided that they couldn’t respond to these requests without the assistance of Dylan Reitenbach, who served as the playground’s director last year and who has been a counselor for several years.

Reitenbach returned from college last weekend and immediately got busy preparing the written plan for a summer camp to submit to county officials. At Monday’s board of trustees meetings, trustee Gosda said she was optimistic that the village would be able to offer the summer program once again.

Gosda also said that she would like to maintain the same fees that participants paid last year, although additional costs to run the program may force an increase. She also noted that it is unlikely that the village will meet its goal of having the summer program pay for itself this year and will be subsidized by the village. Trustee Gioia said that camp counselors likely will receive a small pay raise, from $8.15 to $8.50 an hour, and an increase for the director.

Last year, the enrollment fees went up to $75 per child for village children and $150 per child outside the village for the six-week session. In 2007, the fee was $25 for village children and before that, it was free.

Comments:

I think I mispronounced Dylan's last name at the work session in my Summer Playground report. It should be Reitenbach. I apologize for my error. Barbara Gosda
