General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 5

GU11
On Saturday, the U11 Cheetahs took second place in the LaGrange tournament and then won the shoot-out contest. The girls then followed that up with a win 4 – 1 win on Sunday against the Goshen Lady Arsenal. Lexi West and Micah Wojehowski played outstanding in goal throughout the weekend’s five events. Goals were scored by Lauren Pinkham (2), Sam Nelbach (2), Emma Sabini (2) Lilian Poling, Maddie Lander, Giovanna Fichera, Wojehowski and West. Jillian Decker and Kaitlyn Preiss were the offensive playmakers while Katarina VanLedtje and Jessica Dwyer lead the defensive effort.  

GU12
The Cornwall United Predators attended the LaGrange Tournament on Saturday May 9th in LaGrangeville, New York. The Predators played teams across New York State and captured took 2nd place in the girls under 12 division. Outstanding defensive play by Erin Leahy, Christa Sidoti, Johanna Caufaglione and Amanda Cushen assisted the Predators success at the tournament. Jacqueline Hogan, Kelsey Fosstveit, and Mary Gallo presence in the midfield set up many goal scoring opportunities. Chrissy McGonnigle, Victoria Colotti, Amanda Cushen, and Julia Kerr scored goals. Erin Geraghty and Samantha Sabini shared goalkeeping duties allowing only 3 goals and combined for 11 saves. Cornwall went undefeated going into the championship match verses the Manhattan Revolution losing a close game 1-0. The Predators have compiled an overall record for the 2009-2010 season of 19-5-5.

On Sunday, The Cornwall Predators defeated Cortland Liberty Belles 2-1. The source behind the win was great passing by the entire team. Mary and Emily Gallo, Victoria Colotti, Jacqueline Hogan, and Erin Leahy had fantastic games. Julia Kerr scored Cornwall’s first goal on fantastic shot into the upper corner. Amanda Cushen delivered a long cross that Kelsey Fosstveit struck one-time for the winning goal. Samantha Sabini and Erin Geraghty had solid performances in goal

GU13-DRAGONFIRE
The Cornwall Dragonfire played head to head against the Goshen Wave for 68 minutes with neither team scoring. Then Cornwall took advantage of a corner kick in the last two minutes of the game. Alex Jurgens scored the winning goal with a header off the perfectly placed cross from Kamryn Brown. Jocelyn Burns, Ileana Lagrutta and Laura Craig did an outstanding job on the defensive end of the field.

HS GIRLS
On Sunday, the Sabres treated their mom’s to an exceptional game of soccer with an impressive 9-2 victory over the Dover Lady Dragons.  The girls dominated possession of the game with their superior passing and aggressive play.  Following a 2-1 lead at halftime, the Sabres exploded on offense in the second half and added 7 additional goals to the tally.  Carly Tice and Andrea Mancuso contributed 2 goals apiece while teammates Miranda Antinucci, Erin Kearns, Hannah Pogulis, Briana Stadler and Courtney Murphy supplied one. Defensively, Kayla Brewer, Kristen Condosta, Hannah Merlo, Amanda Fasano, Alejandra Cordero, Rachel Miller, Melissa Mariani and Gabby Chamberland shut down Dover’s offense.  This marks the Sabres 5th league match win for the spring season.

BU13
The Storm swept the field with instinctive play in a total team effort versus Shrub Oak, coming away with a decisive 3-0 win.  Damon Neil scored 3 goals today with step up support by all and special assists from Andrew Stein, Davis Fleming and Jake McCrea. Awesome defense kept the opponent scoreless. Great hustle throughout the game by Eric Growney and Chance Mannix.
