General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 4

May 05, 2009

GU13-CYCLONES
The GU-13 Cyclones took on the first place Orange County Express. The Express have the most potent offense in the division, but the Cyclones were able to completely silence them, preventing even a single goal.  Cornwall keeper Laurel Schuster was a brick wall that OC simply could not penetrate.  Defender Rose Foody closed down every OC attempt that came down Cornwall's right side. On offense, Alex Steinman had many shots on goal that were deflected, nearly scoring on several occasions.  Rebecca Baumel's foot skills left the OC defenders wondering where she went.  In the end, neither team could find the back of the net and the game ended tied, 0-0.

HS GIRLS
The Cornwall Sabres continue their successful spring season with a decisive 7-0 victory over Liberty United FC.  Carly Tice opened up the scoring with a determined drive and a precise shot within the first 2 minutes of the match.  She followed up with a second goal later in the first period.  Miranda Antinucci also contributed 2 scores for the Sabres while Briana Stadler, Kayla Brewer, Erin Kearns and Hannah Pogulis are credited with one a piece.  Alejandra Cordero and Andrea Mancuso supplied strong midfield performances along with double assists.  The defensive play of Courtney Murphy, Amanda Fasano, Kristen Condosta and Hanah Merlo made it difficult for Liberty to get close to shooting range.

BU13
The U13 Storm played an aggressive game, with solid teamwork and was the victor over the Mahopac Arrows, 2-1.  Ian Barnes scored first with an assist from Andrew Stein who moments later scored on an assist from Omar Arrieta. Ryan Mellino cleared many balls on defense and Kevin Stevens had several stellar saves to preserve the victory. Artem Ryabov and Chris Regan hustled throughout the fast paced game.

CUSC MEN’S TEAM
The Cornwall United O30 Men were tested by a good E. Fishkill team.  The opening 15 minutes of the match featured possession by Cornwall's midfield with crisp passes and controlled runs in the E. Fishkill end of the field.  One ill-fated pass lead to an E. Fiskill breakaway and a 1-0 deficit, for the otherwise dominating Cornwall Men.  Not to be deterred, the style of Cornwall's play continued and by halftime, Bobby Czumak used a bull run on a Denis O'Keefe through ball to net the first goal and end the half 1-1.  The second half was almost a replay of the first half, with another E. Fishkill goal coming off a mistake on defense.  Cornwall could not be stopped with three unanswered goals from Center Middies Stash Florkowski (2) and Pete Harris, off a low driving Free Kick.  Tom Keefer was acrobatic between the pipes with making two point blank saves.  Jeff Moulton played his first game this spring and anchored the back line. Now 3-0 this spring, the men take on Mahopac next week that is one place up in the standings.
