General News: Eco-Art Creations in Black Rock Forest

There is a whisper in the wind at Black Rock Forest, calling the adventurous to come out to look for natural objects transformed by the human hand. The environmental art installations will be revealed to all beginning Saturday, September 30th in the first of a novel series of art events called Art About Water that celebrates this natural resource that is so vital to survival of not only humans but all of the natural world. The series is presented by the Arts Alliance of the Lower Hudson Valley.

The natural creations that will be hidden throughout Black Rock Forest are the work of Jean Linville, an eco-artist and arts educator who wants to draw people into the outdoors, to experience the beauty of the place. Using all natural materials, she is building cairns and other sculptures that visitors will find in and around the forest. The exhibit is called Whispered Wisdom 12518-20.

“Through my art, I hope to lead others to discover the beauty and healing properties that the natural world has to offer to all of its inhabitants,” Linville says in her artist’s statement. “Ultimately, I hope that viewers will be moved to find and create their own productive energy in the world and become proponents for those that do not possess a human voice.”

As part of the Whispered Wisdom 12518-20 exhibit, Linville is also putting up seven easels in the forest where people can create their own art and submit it to the silent auction that will be held on October 7 at the educational center.

Linville has been drawing her inspiration from trees for several years. Visitors can see her black-and-white photography, book arts and poetry on display at the Black Rock Educational Center, where people are asked to register before seeking out the artwork. The center is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 239 Reservoir Road, off 9W south. If the center is closed, maps to find the artwork will be available at the kiosk in the parking lot.

From Black Rock Forest, Linville will extend her series of installations to the Storm King School on Mountain Road, where she will work with the students to construct and outdoor installation that will illustrate to the viewer a portion of Moodna watershed ridge that is located on the school grounds. This portion of the exhibit will be open October 15, 20 and 21.

The Art About Water events run through October 21st. Visit www.theartsalliance.net for a full schedule of events and visit the artist's website at www.dancingbranches.com.
