General News: Two Join Race for County Seat

March 30, 2009

Two Cornwall men are jumping into the race for a seat on the Orange County legislature.

On Monday, former Cornwall supervisor Richard Randazzo announced that he is running for the 12th District seat to be vacated by Republican Alan Seidman, who announced earlier this month that he is not seeking another term.   Randazzo’s gotten the endorsement of the Cornwall Democratic Committee and will seek the party’s county support in May.

On the Republican side, Kevin Hines says he is making his first bid for public office in a run for the same seat.  Hines, the assistant chief of the Cornwall fire department, has been active in party politics for seven years and says he will seek the Orange County Republican party’s endorsement at its convention on May 28th.

Randazzo, who served as town supervisor for 20 years and as a trustee of the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson for three, told News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson that he is running because he enjoys serving the public as an elected official and sees this as an opportunity to put his experience to work.  He was defeated last November in his third attempt to unseat New York State Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun (R-Blooming Grove).

Hines says that running for public office is a natural step for him because he has been helping the community for most of his adult life, whether as a member or an officer of the Cornwall fire department or as a coach of Little League and youth football. “If you enter politics with the sole goal of helping people,” Hines said Monday in a phone interview, “you will be successful.”

Both would-be candidates see plenty of issues that they want to get involved with on a county level.  Randazzo would like to see an improved county-wide transportation system and more support for municipal planning.   Hines, with more than 25 years of  experience with fire and emergency work, would like to use his expertise to help the county improve its emergency communications system.

The 12th Legislative District encompasses nine election districts in Cornwall, five in Blooming Gove and one in Woodbury.  There are a total of 21 seats in the county legislature.  Republicans currently occupy 10 of the seats and 10 are held by Democrats.  A member of the Independence Party holds the remaining seat.
