Short News Briefs from the March 23, 2009 Board of Education Meeting
* The retirement of custodian Joyce Lennon caught the attention of schools superintendent Timothy Rehm, who praised Lennon for doing so much for the children during her 37 years with the district. School board member Melanie Mulroy-Robinson, a former principal at Lee Road elementary school, also spoke highly of Lennon. “I never knew anyone who could accomplish as much as she did,” Mulroy-Robinson said, “she is a unique employee.” Lennon’s retirement takes effect at the end of March.
* The high school auditorium will have an improved sound system just in time for next week’s drama club performance of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” High School principal Frank Sheboy said that several student activity clubs, including the drama club, raised more than $5,000 for the upgrade, which includes new speakers and a repositioning of the sound system. More changes are planned, Sheboy noted, once the clubs can raise another $5,000.
* School board president Brendan Coyne said he is glad that the Article 78 petition against the village of Woodbury still has life in it. The petition seeks to overturn zoning changes that allow the construction of high-density houses in the Legacy Ridge development, which sits inside the Cornwall school district. Earlier this month, a judge ruled that the school district, the town of Cornwall, and the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson do not have standing to pursue the case, leaving only the Black Rock Fish and Game Club as a petitioner. Coyne said the board will be discussing whether to appeal the judge’s decision. (Click here for more on the judge's decision.)
