General News: Hudson-Fulton Day at the Riverfront

Planning for the Hudson-Champlain-Fulton Quadricentennial Community Day on Sunday, June 7, is gaining momentum as spring approaches. Committee chair member Barbara Gosda, who is a trustee of the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, said that the village committee is planning two simultaneous programs at the riverfront that day. The festivities are set for the day after the annual Riverfest celebration.
On Sunday, organizers are planning a program for children that will include educators from the Outdoor Education Program of the Department of Environmental Conservation. Adults will have speakers as well, including a representative from Scenic Hudson who will talk about the legal battle to stop Con Edison from building a power plant on Storm King Mountain and environmental educators who will talk about the health of the river.
Trustee Gosda says that the highlight of the day will be the arrival of a flotilla of boats at 5 p.m. The flotilla will include the replica of Henry Hudson’s Half Moon, the Clearwater and the Woody Guthrie, which will be joined by hundreds of other vessels from yacht and boating clubs on the Hudson River as they make their way from Manhattan to Albany. The boats will pass Cornwall Landing late in the afternoon before dropping anchor for the night in Newburgh and Beacon.
With music and food provided by Storm King Fire Engine Company #2, Gosda says the day should be a lot of fun for people in the greater Cornwall area.
The village committee is also coordinating at least two other Quadricentennial events. Local artist Barbara Smith Gioia has organized an exhibit of the sculptures created by nine artists that will be placed in Donahue Memorial Park from June 20 through August 8. And Jackie Skrzynski, another painter who lives in the village, will be leading silent walks every month on the waxing moon to provide a contemplative space for experiencing the Hudson Highlands environment. The village Quadricentennial committee is holding a meeting on Tuesday, February 24, at 7 p.m. at Village Hall and the public is welcomed.

Sounds like a great day. What a wonderful town we live in. I can't wait, we'll be able to enjoy the activities on shore as well as bring down our kyakes and enjoy the activities on the water. Great day...Can't wait.
