General News: Tax Protest on Hudson Street

A resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson has launched a tax protest by hanging a sign outside his home on Hudson Street.

On Thursday morning, Lee Murphy, who recently served as chair of the village master plan committee, raised the sign advertising his property for sale at the value assigned by the Cornwall tax assessor last year.

Murphy says he put up the sign to protest what he and his wife, Jaci, consider to be an unrealistic assessment of their 1875 brick home. He says he hopes the move will spark awareness in the community of the unfair burden property owners face.

“People talk to each other and complain bitterly about their tax bill, then pay it and wait for next year to come along, but they are not directing their complaints publicly so that public officials understand the anger abroad in the community,” Murphy says.

Murphy suggests that what is needed to ease the tax burden is for the state to come up with a different means of funding education or demand that communities across the state revalue properties.

Ok. i have now officially seen enough of Mr. Murphy's grandstanding. let me say i live in a 1200 sqft. ranch on 1/2 acre in the village and the true value of my home is $260,000. So Mr. Murphy I am certain that your multi-level BRICK home is probly underassesed at $414,000. my problem with what seems to be your usual soapbox rally is what i have read on website's, in print, and heard through word of mouth, is all your hair brained idea's on what the village should do next to cater to it's residents every whim, boat docks/Donahue Park/Buisness'/etc...because that's what you are accustomed to from wence you came before you moved to our backwoods lifestyle. Well how do you expect the Village Gov't to provide thease services to the likes of those who think like you do without raising taxes to levels that you moved away from in the 1st place. Mr. Murphy if only you could see yourself through the eye's of the "majority" who live around you that dont share or care for your views. unfortunatly most of us are to busy providing for our working class families and have better things to do then finding new ways to see our face in print.
