General News: Mayor Seeks DOT Assistance

Residents want the safety of this intersection improved.
Residents want the safety of this intersection improved.
February 09, 2009

Cornwall-on-Hudson mayor Joseph Gross is asking state senator Bill Larkin and assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun to help improve the safety of three intersections in the village.

In a letter to the two state officials, mayor Gross said the state department of transportation has been unwilling to assist the village in improving safety at the intersections of Route 218 (Hudson Street) and Academy Avenue, Duncan Avenue and Dock Hill Road. He said that without the assistance of the DOT the village can do nothing to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety on the state road.

Last October, mayor Gross wrote to the DOT asking for assistance and he received a response on February 2, in which regional director Joan Dupont said no work was planned on Hudson Street intersections because they are not "high accident locations."  Dupont wrote that if the village wants to pursue improvements, it could apply to the Orange County Transportation Council.

Along with his letter to Larkin and Calhoun, the mayor also sent copies of two petitions signed by residents who are particularly concerned with the safety of the Duncan Avenue intersection. Those petitions were presented to the village at a public hearing last month and echoed concerns voiced two years ago at a similar public hearing.

Since then, the Village Square Improvement Committee studied the issue and recommended last June to extend the curb at the intersection of Duncan Avenue and Hudson Street to improve visibility and slow down traffic. The group also proposed revamping the intersections at Academy Avenue and Dock Hill Road.
