In the first grade classrooms of Willow Avenue elementary school the students recently took an imaginary voyage to new lands, where they learned about the different holiday practices in each one.

The Multi-Cultural Heritage Project was organized by first-grade teachers Beth Tellefsen, Tara Burke and Eleonora Penzanaro, with help from librarian Jane Disare, to encourage the children to expand their understanding of other peoples and cultures.

A group of young students appeared before the Cornwall school board on Monday to show the adults the passports they made as they traveled from imaginary country to country.   Mrs. Penzanaro told the board that the students learned about Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Christmas and Kwanza.  They tasted the foods, like latkes, a potato pancake popular during Hanukkah, and Mrs. Disare, the librarian found books about the different holidays and traditions.

The children also took a walking trip in Cornwall, visiting the Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, and Episcopal churches, and Gail Berger described a synagogue.

Mrs. Penzanaro said that the heritage project ended with families coming into class to share traditional foods from their culture with the students.
