General News: Events Wanted for Quadricentennial

The Cornwalls Coordinating Committee of the 2009 Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration is inviting all local groups, organizations and individuals to attend a meeting on Thursday evening, February 5, to plan a series of public celebrations of the historic events.
Committee members Mary Beth Greene Krafft and Deke Hazirjian said that the meeting will be a chance to talk to groups about how they can develop a Quadricentennial theme in their annual activities, from the Independence Day parade to the Apple Time Fair at Cornwall Presbyterian church.
The year-long celebration, called Explore NY 400, marks the 400th anniversary of Hendrik Hudson’s exploration of th river that bears his name and of French explorer Samuel de Champlain’s simultaneous travels to what came to be called Lake Champlain. It’s also the 202nd anniversary of the launching of the world’s first commercially successful steamship, Robert Fulton’s Hudson paddle wheeler Clermont.
Cut backs in state funding have limited the scope of large-scale celebrations but Greene Krafft and Hazirjian explained that the focus will now turn to authentic, homegrown events throughout the Hudson Valley. The village committee, headed by trustee Barbara Gosda, is committed to creating a community day celebration at the riverfront in August and plans for a sculpture exhibit starting later this spring in Donahue Memorial Park are also underway under the hand of artist Barbara Gioia.
Greene Krafft said the Cornwalls Committee will focus on promoting these and other themed events in a printed guide to Cornwall activities and on the website, www.cornwalls2009.org. She said members of all local organizations – schools, school committees, non-profits, churches, and sports clubs – are welcome to come to the meeting next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Munger Cottage o brainstorm about how to integrate the celebration into their activities.
