General News: Crowded Trustee Race Shapes Up

January 25, 2009

Two more village residents picked up petitions on Friday, bringing a total of six candidates to the crowded race for two seats on the Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees.

Dennis Wood is a 37-year veteran of the Storm King Fire Engine Company No. 2 and he says he is running for office on the same agenda as fellow candidate Douglas Vatter, who is president of the volunteer fire company.

Wood says his concern is to see that the village adopts a fair and equitable budget.  He says that his two terms as president of the fire company gave him the experience he needs to develop and maintain a budget.    A village native, Wood says he ran for trustee in 1987, losing to Tony Ferraro by 15 votes.

Jim Kane, who also picked up a petition to run for trustee on Friday,  has lived in the village since 2001.  A lawyer and Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve, Kane says that he wants to give back to the community and when he saw that trustee Fogarty would be stepping down, he thought he would enter the race.

With years of experience in the Manhattan district attorney’s office, Kane is part of a small law practice in Rockland County.    He lives with his wife and six-year-old son on Hudson Street.

Both new candidates must collect 75 valid signatures on their petitions by February 10 in order to have their names appear on the ballot in the March 18 election.   The other four candidates gathering signatures for the trustee race are incumbent Mark Edsall,  Andrew Argenio,  Maryanne Rose O’Dell,  and Douglas Vatter.

Comments:

Mark Edsall knows his stuff. Keep him. Dennis Wood knows a lot of things too. He can add a lot of perspective to the process, not necessarily from only one viewpoint.I have the most respect for these two men. Ask the old timers. Chas. Obremski (Trustee-Mayor 1975-1979)

yahoo, democracy!!! If the election is March 18 will the community have an opportunity to speak with the candidates, as in the forum before the last election? I think Ken Schmidt did a good job moderating the last one. And, I think it would be good to see the candidates in a public setting as I don't think they will be able to make contact with enough of the voters on an individual basis between now and election day.
Personally, I am sticking with Mark Edsall; I believe he is sensible, experienced, and open minded. I am partial to Andrew Argenio because he has the cutest dog in the world! no, just kidding, the dog is cute but, given his recycling work, I think he has the knowledge to get us moving toward a more 'green' existence.
