The bags are being offered for $3 each or four for $10.00. Bags can be purchased at the school as you enter and sign in or you can contact Joann Incognoli at 534-2427. Thanks for supporting our school and our environment.

Did you know that 100 billion plastic check out bags are produced each year? To make those 100 billion bags, 12 million barrels of oil are used, and over
$200 million per year is spent to clean up as litter! (The NY Times 7/24/07, Times Herald Record 8/10/08). Only 1% of plastic bags are reused - the rest end up in landfills. Over 200,000 plastic bags are dumped into landfills EVERY MINUTE! This is because it costs more to recycle a plastic bag than it does to produce a new one.
It can take anywhere from 15 to 1,000 years for these bags to breakdown and, what’s worse is that they photo degrade- they break down into smaller, more toxic petro-polymers which contaminate the soil and waterways. Over 100,000 whales, seals, turtles and other marine life die each year due to plastic
bags. They mistake the bags for food and then ingest them, or become entangled in them. Plastic bags are made from petroleum or natural gas-
both are non-renewable resources that increase our dependency on foreign oil.

By purchasing reusable cloth bags, we can save an average of 6 bags per week, or 288 bags per year or 22,176 bags in an average lifetime. Imagine
how much less oil our nation would use if everyone did that!

Many cities such as San Francisco, Bangladesh, Rwanda and China have banned plastic bags. China alone will save over 37 MILLION barrels of oil each
year due to the ban. (CNN 1/9/08). Right here in New York, New Paltz as well as Sullivan county have taken the steps to switch consumers and
retailers to reusable bags.

We are pleased to be offering reusable cloth bags with the Cornwall-on-Hudson Dragon logo.
