General News: Notes from Cornwall Town Board Work Session

September 05, 2007

**  Residents of Mine Hill Road have been alerted to work scheduled to begin this week on a new drainage system.  Town supervisor Dick Randazzo says that the $669,000 project will install a drainage system for the first time along 3,500 feet of the road.  Motorists can expect delays for the next sixty days while the crews are working, although Randazzo says they will try to keep one lane open for traffic.

** Town tax assessor Ronald Fiorentino is up for re-appointment by the town board at the end of September.  Board members agreed to hold an executive session following next week’s board meeting in order to discuss the performance of Mr. Fiorentino.

** Supervisor Randazzo informed the board that Moody’s Investor Service has raised the town’s rating from an A-2 to an A-1.  The A-1 standing, Randazzo said, was granted because the town is in good financial position, with strong budgeting. Randazzo noted that the higher rating puts the municipality in a better financial position for borrowing.

** Cornwall highway department employee Paul Gilardo resigned his position on September 4, following his arraignment last month on charges of petty larceny and possession of stolen property.  Mr. Gilardo pleaded not guilty to the charges.  Police say that he removed two vehicle inspection stickers from the department

** The Cornwall police department has hired part-time officer George Krause, who starts on September 11.  Krause started his law enforcement career as an officer in Cornwall, then moved to the New Windsor police department before returning here, Chief Todd Hazard told the board.

** The recreation department’s summer youth program was a big success, according to town board member Mary Beth Greene Krafft.  The final event, a battle of the bands featuring acts that were rained out in July, took place on Friday night, August 31, in front of some 150 people at Town Hall.  Mrs. Greene Krafft said that Orange County Youth Bureau, which funded the program, is “very, very pleased and it looks like we are in for next year.”
