General News: Fogarty to Retire as Trustee

William Fogarty
William Fogarty
January 13, 2009

Cornwall-on-Hudson village trustee William Fogarty announced Monday evening that he will not be running again for a seat on the board in the election to be held on March 18.   By stepping aside,  trustee Fogarty leaves his seat wide open.

Fogarty, 63,  has been on the board for 20 years and he told News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson that it is time to give somebody else a chance.  “I had a great run,” he said, “and I wish the board well.”

With a career in banking, Fogarty brought a watchful eye to how the village spent money.  He frequently reminded fellow board members not to spend money the village didn’t have and pushed them to pay down debt systematically.

“I hope that the board continues on this path,” he said, “so that one day we are debt-free.”

Fogarty thanked the public for its support during ten election cycles and said he is very happy to have given back to the village.   He explained that it is now time for him to retire and spend more time with his three grandchildren.  “I’ve been out late at night a lot of nights,” he noted, “and have to thank my bride of 40 years for keeping me on the straight and narrow.”

Two trustee seats are up for re-election in March.  Current trustee Mark Edsall has said he is running for re-election.   As of today, no one has picked up a petition to run for the second trustee position.  A minimum of 75 valid signatures must be submitted by February 10,2009, for a candidate’s name to appear on the ballot.

Comments:

Mr. Fogarty,

Thank you for your service. The Village is better off for having you on the board and you will be missed. Enjoy your time away from Village politics.
