Welcome 2009!
January 01, 2009

A hearty group of merry-makers welcomed the New Year to Cornwall-on-Hudson at midnight on Wednesday.

Some two hundred people withstood the biting cold winds and temperatures near zero to see the sparkling ball drop from the roof of Storm King Theatre. On a stage above the theater’s marquee, Elvis impersonator Sebastian Damico danced and sang in the cold, dressed only in a thin white pantsuit.

Some people in the crowd below moved to the rock ‘n roll music. Others greeted friends, family and neighbors in what has now become a new local tradition.

Nicky Correa and friends organized the first ball drop in 2001. This was the second year for Ray Yannone, who owns the theater building, and his son, Ray, Jr., to build the globe and organize the entertainment.

Shortly before midnight, singer/dancer Damico asked for the time and the countdown to zero began.

The ride down for the New Year’s Eve ball was brief. After it touched the sidewalk, the numbers 2009 just below the stage were illuminated just and “Auld Lang Syne” played on the audio system. People kissed, hugged and exchanged well wishes before hurrying back out into the night.

Comments:

Thanks to all who put on the show. It's just another wonderful event which shows just how special the Village is, no matter the season.

The new ball is spectacular. Isn't it big and bright enough to drop along a pole on the roof, like was done a couple years ago? (Should be more controllable in the wind, too.)

But Bravo, and thanks, to all who made New Years Eve happen!

Oh, and thanks too to SKE#2 for the hard work they do on that big tree every year. It's a big job but a great sight -- truly the other half of the holiday magic in the Village.

Thanks once again to the Yannone's for this community service. What a great ball and great way to establish a new tradition! Looking forward to next year.

Huge thanks to the Yannones for borrowed 'bragging rights' - at the risk of exposing our "exclusive" village celebration I often tell people about the fun and fanfare and most times they can't quite believe it! It seems so natural that this would happen in the village. Thanks again for the great fun, and all within walking distance!
