The top stories of 2008, based on the number of times the story was read on News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson, will surprise many regular readers of the online news source.

We all have our personal favorite recollections of the year, but what stories grabbed the most attention?

1.   At the top of the list is the story of Daniella Jones, the substitute science teacher at Cornwall High School who was dismissed for touching a student who talked back to her.  The story is about school policy and the students, family members, and members of the public who came out to support Jones’ effort to maintain decorum in the classroom.  The student who Jones disciplined charged her with harassment.  The outcome of that incident is reported in the eigth most popular story below.  Read the original story here.

2.
The No. 2 top story featured a spread of photos taken by Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Julia Lawrence.  Lawrence lives on Duncan Avenue and when she heard a black bear was in the road near Jogue’s Retreat last June, she grabbed her camera and took these photos.   See Black Bear on the Move here.

3.  When actors, producers and directors began shooting scenes from Handsome Harry at Storm King Golf Course and on Braden Place in Cornwall-on-Hudson many movie-lovers and the curious read the story.  Check out top story No. 3 here.

4.  The Oprah show has millions of viewers nationwide daily and so it should be no surprise that when Cornwall was featured on the program, interest swelled.  Coming in at No. 4 is “Cornwall on Oprah Today.

5.  The fifth most-read story was published when the producers of the independent film Handsome Harry were looking for locations to shoot the film.  Read the story here.

6.
A lot of people must like the coffee – and ambience – of 2 Alices Coffee Lounge -- or at least they like to read about it.  When the popular lounge changed hands last October, nearly 1,000 readers were introduced to the new owners right here.  Click here for top story No. 6.

7.  We share a lot of photos here on the website, but none drew more interest than those taken just two weeks ago when an ice storm knocked out power and covered the treetops throughout Cornwall.  Visit top story No. 7, “Mine Hill Road in Ice,” here.

8.  The No. 8 top story tells of how Daniella Jones, the teacher fired for touching a student, had her day in court.  Read “Teacher Found Not Guilty of Harassment” here.

9. They say that everyone loves a parade and the next top story seems to prove that true.  With organizations, bands and veterans from Cornwall represented, the annual Memorial Day parade story came in a No. 9.  Check it out here.

10.   When liquid dripped from a passing train at the riverfront last May, authorities closed the park and spent hours determining if the spill posed a danger to local residents..  Read about what happened here.
