General News: Dozen Democrats in Primary

September 11, 2006

The Democrats have a broad field of contenders for public office in the September 12 primary election. The Independence Party fields two candidate for state assembly.

Governor’s Race
Topping the ballot is the race for New York State Governor. The leading contender for the Democratic nomination is current Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, who visited Cornwall-on-Hudson in July, when he promised to push the problem of property taxes to the front of his agenda in office. Facing him in the primary is Thomas Suozzi, the Nassau County executive.

Attorney General Race
Three people are running for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General: Andrew Cuomo, a lawyer and former Clinton administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary,: Mark Green, the former New York City Consumer Affairs Commissioner and Public Advocate; Charles G. King, a lawyer and Democratic Party activist, and Sean Patrick Maloney, a corporate attorney and former Clinton White House aide. King withdrew from the race on September 5, throwing his support to Cuomo, but his name remains on the ballot.

Challenge to Senator Clinton
In the U.S. Senate race, first-term senator Hillary Clinton faces a challenge for the Democratic party nomination from Jonathan Tasini, a former labor leader, writer and activist who is challenging her primarily for her support of the war in Iraq. Clinton also has the support of the Independence and Working Family parties.

Four-Way Race for U.S. House of Representatives
The race to become the Democratic challenger to Republican congresswoman Sue Kelly is the liveliest, with four candidates vying for the opportunity. John Hall, a former rock musician and environmentalist, leads the race, with the endorsement of the Democratic parties of Orange, Rockland, and Dutchess counties. He will face Judith Adylenott, a trial lawyer from Katonah, Darren Rigger, a political consultant from Peekskill, and 29-year-old Ben Shuldiner, the principal of a high school for public service he founded in Brooklyn.

Independence Party Voters Have a Choice in the 97th District
State Assembly Candidates Ann G. Rabbitt, the incumbent state assemblywoman faces no challenges from the Republican Party, but she does face opposition for the Independence Party nomination from Michael D. Paduch, of Middletown, who has the backing of the Democratic and Working Families Party. Rabbitt, a Greenwood Lake business owner, was elected to her first term in 2004.

Randazzo Challenges Calhoun
You won’t see the names of either current state assembly member Nancy Calhoun or Richard Randazzo on the ballot. Both are unopposed – Calhoun for the Republican and Conservative Party tickets and Randazzo for the Democratic, Independence and Working Families Party tickets. Randazzo, Cornwall town supervisor and village resident, will face the incumbent, Calhoun, in November.
