General News: Walks to Experience Landscape

Jackie Skrzynski is a Cornwall-on-Hudson artist who came up with the idea of creating the Half Moon Walks in which people will gather once a month on the waxing moon and walk silently up Storm King Mountain to observe the landscape.  Here, she talks about her inspiration for the walks.

Where did you get this idea?

I have always loved the work of Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long, two artists who essentially point to nature and say, “Notice this!”  Of course, I also love the landscape painters of the area, particularly George Inness and Thomas Cole.  I wanted to make art for the celebration and thought of this while I was enjoying the woods near my home in Cornwall-on-Hudson.  There really is no substitute for experiencing landscape first hand.  This is what I wanted—art not one bit removed from the experience.  Even Richard Long’s famous “walks” where he walks along the countryside and documents his trail is essentially about memory for everyone except him.  I don’t want to evoke memory; I want to CREATE it.  Actually, to be clear, I am simply facilitating a situation where memories can be created.  Nature, weather, the participants, will do most of the work.

Why walk in silence?
I love walking with friends, but the truth is we miss A LOT when we are carrying on our conversations.  When I walk alone, I only have the distractions in my own mind, so I  notice my surroundings more.  I don’t imagine these little walks will be life-altering moments of nirvana, but I do hope participants will be filled with awareness of Storm King Mountain and the beauty of the Hudson River.  If some people are able to take every walk over the course of the year, they will experience the season’s cycle.  How can you improve on that?

Is the walk strenuous?
It mostly goes along an old road, so is wide and a bit rocky.  It has a steady incline, but really is NOT difficult.  With comfortable shoes, a normally active person could do this easily.  The walk to the look-out only takes about 20 minutes. This walk is not going to the Storm King summit.

What should people wear/bring?
Participants should wear weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes.  Bring bug spray, water.  This is completely at the participant’s own risk.

When's the first walk? I want to come.
