General News: Half-Moon Walk & Other Celebrations Planned

The Half Moon Walks will bring you views like this.
The Half Moon Walks will bring you views like this.
December 19, 2008

A Half-Moon Walk on Storm King mountain every month at 6 p.m. on the evening of the waxing moon will begin in June as part of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebrations planned in the area.

Artist Jackie Skrzynski says that she will lead these silent walks as a form of performance art, inviting the walker to consider the changes of the seasons, the light and the weather. Skrzynski was inspired by the Hudson Valley school of landscape painting, which portrayed dramatic scenes throughout the area and she is hoping that the walkers will experience the art created by nature along the trails.  The timing of the walks on the half moon pays tribute to Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon.  The walks are planned to run through May 2010.

The walks represent just one of the projects that the village committee has planned for the 2009 celebration.  Trustee Barbara Gosda reported on Monday that the group, which has expanded to more than a half-dozen volunteers, is planning a float for the 4th of July float and a remembrance of the 1909 bandstand concert that marked the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage.  Committee member Barbara Gioia is organizing a sculpture exhibit at Donahue Memorial.   Plans are also in the works for  a day-long Community Day celebration at the waterfront on August 29.

Trustee Gosda says that money will be tighter than anticipated because of mounting budget deficits in Albany but that won’t stop the committee from going ahead with its plans.  She invites members of the public to join the Explore 400 village committee, which will meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in village hall.
