Some 500 people, mostly Mexican immigrants, turned out Sunday afternoon for the annual celebration of the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a patron saint for people across Mexico. The feast commemorates the Virgin Mary's appearance to Juan Diego, an Aztec peasant, in 1531.

The people attending the dance and music celebration in the auditorium of St. Patrick’s church in Newburgh came for the elaborate costumes of the dancers and to remember the traditions of their homeland.  The ages of those present ranged from infants to elderly.

In the Danza Azteca,  young maidens placed a crown of giant peacock feathers on the head of a costumed young male who then performed a stylized dance with the maidens and other males.

Another dance had the flavor of nortena ranchero music, just a few steps away from the Tex-Mex music played in Texas.  A half-dozen couples danced in a circle, stepping quickly, then slowly lowered down to their knees while still moving forward.

Food was served to all of the party-goers and more dancing and music followed on this special day at St. Patrick’s for Newburgh’s Mexican community.
