A new sign directing drivers to the village municipal parking lot went up last Friday on the front lawn of the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School on Hudson Street.
The classic scroll lettering of the sign and its wooden post decorated with wrought iron, adds the air of a classic New England village while achieving the practical goal of letting visitors know where to park.
The sign was created by the Village Square Improvement Committee, which earlier this year made a number of recommendations about how to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and accessibility and parking in the central business area. The parking sign is the first in what the committee expects to be a uniformed design for street signs. It was chosen because while the committee in its report didn’t see a need for additional parking, it did say that visitors could use help finding what does exist.
The new sign was approved by the village trustees last July. Trustees Rick Gioia and Barbara Gosda also serve on the improvement committee and they oversaw the sign project. Village clerk Jeanne Mahoney says that the new sign cost $860. She noted that the improvement committee is expecting grant money from the state to oversee the cost for the sign, as well as for other projects in the square, including a widening of the sidewalk that runs through it.
