December 06, 2008

Peter Neuman publicly launched his bid for mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson with a letter he sent on Thursday to more than 1,200 households in which he described actions he would take if elected.

A color insert came with the letter featuring a photograph of the 70-year-old Neuman and a  summary of his background and experience, including 40 years as a practicing attorney and service with numerous professional and voluntary organizations.  (Read more about Peter Neuman here.)

Neuman says in the letter that he will start knocking on residents’ doors in mid-January and notes that it is too soon to begin a spirited campaign for the election, which will be held in March 2009.

When asked about the letter on Friday, Mayor  Joseph said he hadn’t seen it – or even heard about.   He also said that he hasn’t gone on the record publicly about his own plans for the upcoming election because he is too busy staying focused on the day-to-day issues of running the village.  He said he expects to announce in a few weeks whether he plans to run for a second term in office.

In the letter, Neuman proposes re-assessing the Cornwall Yacht Club from under $200,000,  surveying residents about garbage and recycling pick-up, and working for legislation to allow payment of school taxes in installments, among other issues.

Neuman said he intends to begin gathering signatures on a nominating petition after the first of the year.  He also invites residents to call him to share their thoughts and concerns about how to make the village a better place for all.

Comments:

Welcome to the village Stephan! now before making a comment one may want to become aware of alignment of political forces. There is one who wants the village to cater to the residents and the other group would rather cater to non residents just keep that in mind when traveling forward in this political environment

Yes, I understand I was 3 yrs old in 71
So, you are saying that Peter is an independent from the two forces?

What disturbed me most (at first) is the fact that although he says he is retired he has his huge letterhead at the top of his flier. My gut feeling is that he is a bulldog, in your face, win at any cost attorney who has no room for anyone else's opinion - not what I'm looking for in a mayor. We've been there, and done that. I hope Joe runs again.(Stephan, how's my vocabulary holding up?)

Many professionals use M.D.'s, P.H.D.'s, Esquire etc. long after they retire. I certainly have no problem with that. In fact I liked the letter. It's a way of introducing himself to the community as everyone doesn't know him. He is a learned man who attended a top notch law school and we should be glad he is throwing his hat in the ring. There have been too many times where our last mayor ran unopposed. This is great that there is competition. A debate before the election would be nice. Kate a "bulldog, in your face attorney" is just who you would want to hire if you needed an attorney. Also Mr. Neuman has a vested interest in the village as does Major Gross. I see this as a great plus. I just wish he would have addressed the debt the village has. But he is just introducing himself to the community and I think we should all welcome him, listen to what he says and make an informed decision from there.

You are absolutely right, Pat. IF I were looking for an *attorney* I would want exactly that- a bull-dog , in your face, win at any cost, attorney. But I am not hiring an attorney I am looking for a mayor. I have lived here for most of my life and Peter Neuman has been in the newspapers enough so that I have to trust my gut feeling about him.

No Stephan, I meant presumptive (based on probability or presumption <the presumptive nominee>). Your living here a long time doesn't mean a thing to me or many other "newcomers". We pay the same taxes and get the same vote you do. For me, Cornwall-on-Hudson is a better place to live over the last year than it was in the first eight years I lived here, thanks to Mayor Gross.
