Two Cornwall residents have landed top media jobs – one with an ad agency right here in Orange County and one in New York City with a kids-oriented music production company.  Liz Nealon and Jay Townsend may be world-class names in their fields, but their ties are also local and intertwined with each other.

Jay Townsend has lived in Cornwall for 20 years where, from his home perched near Black Rock Forest, he has engineered political campaigns across the country and the region as head of The Townsend Group.

Now Townsend has joined Focus Media as chief operating officer and will work alongside Focus Media’s president and CEO Josh Sommers, who uses political-style advertising campaigns for corporate clients.

Townsend brings a long list of clients to his new position.  He has worked with political figures from Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX) and Governor and Senator Pete Wilson (R-CA) to  Congressmen Bill Lowery (R-CA) and Sue Kelly (R-NY).  In Orange County, he counts successful campaigns for County Executive Ed Diana and Sheriff Carl DuBois, on a long list that includes mayors,  judges and legislators.

A noted wordsmith, Townsend has also won national awards for his television, persuasion mail and newspaper ads for candidates.  He also has been a frequent commentator on FOX News.

When he is not hard at work in the political world, Townsend is busy raising five sons with his wife Rebecca Darlington Townsend, a noted painter and artist.  He also is very active with St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall where he is the senior warden.   It is at St. John’s that he crosses paths with Liz Nealon, whose clear voice can often be heard in the church’s choir.

Liz Nealon has lived in Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson for 14 years, raising a daughter, Jules Kelly, now a senior at Cornwall high school, and commuting to high profile jobs in New York City.

Nealon’s latest gig is general manager of Kidz Bop, a hugely successful music brand for children ages 5 to 12.    She has worked with music and young people for most of her career, which took off when she helped launch pop music channel MTV in the early 1980s and where she rose to senior vice president.   More recently, she produced online media for children as the creative director of Sesame Street and created Panwapa Island, a virtual world experience created in five languages that delivers a global citizenship curriculum to children aged four to seven.

Nealon says that she enjoys developing creative media products for children and with children because they are fun. “I find that young audiences -- whether kids, teens or young adults -- are open to new ideas and fresh creative approaches, which means that my work life is continually interesting and surprising,” Nealon said when asked about her focus on young audiences.
