General News: Absentee Ballots GIve Obama Lead in Cornwall

November 22, 2008

The absentee ballots from Orange County voters have been tallied by the Board of Elections and the results give President-elect Barack Obama a slight edge among Cornwall voters.

Prior to the addition of the absentee ballots, the unofficial tally of votes in Cornwall put Republican candidate John McCain ahead of his rival, Obama by a vote of 3,168 to 3,13. The absentee ballots gave Obama 291 more votes and gave 165 more to Mccain, resulting in a new unofficial vote total of 3,422 for Obama and 3,333 for McCain.

Orange County Board of Elections Commissioner David Green said that the official vote should be established by the end of the month. That will include a breakdown of votes by polling station and will make it possible to report the vote totals separately among voters in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, the town of Cornwall and Mountainville.

In the unofficial tally of votes published before the absentee ballots were added, in the town of Cornwall, the margin of victory for McCain was 2,067 to 1,961, while in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Obama won by an unofficial tally of 870 to 799. In Mountainville, candidate McCain squeaked by with a narrow margin, getting 302 votes to Obama’s 300 votes.
