General News: Date This Post Card

Cherry Street Postcard
Cherry Street Postcard
July 31, 2007

Two readers looked at the postcard of Cherry Street and took a guess about the date of the photo.

** As an educated guesstimate I would say that the post card was shot between 100-125 ago. I say this because the only thing that can really indicate any era to me in the picture is the presence of what appears to be telephone or telegraph wires.  I don't think they are power wires as they look too thin.

** Here’s a guess on my part -- Fall of 1860.

Comments:

I'd ballpark it at about 1910-1915 from the Mead & Taft catalogue houses, and the shallow hollow at the left which once held a placer pond, where John Speranza now has his house. I'd have to look up the power generation for CoH, because the wires look like they could have maintained the Westinghouse DC system, which only was 28 volts. The powerhouse was at the village square. One thing is certain, though;it's either very early spring or late fall - there are no leaves on the trees.
