General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 8

November 06, 2008

U9 GIRLS
The Lady Tigers hustled all day and came away with a 1-1 tie against Highland.  Defense was once again key thanks to the rock solid efforts of Ava Sabini, Brittany Morasse and Cassidy Brusseler.  Nicole Shapiro and Tess McVann continue to shine with their superb play as the Tiger’s Goal Keepers.  Madison Mozgiel made her debut for the Lady Tigers this week and accounted for the lone score.

U10 GIRLS
The Scorpions powered past Warwick 5-0 with goals by Monika Morasse, Samantha Incognoli (2), Olivia Davet and Amelia Harding.  Erin Briggs consistently beat her opponents and pushed the ball up field while Briana Wallace, Kayla Beckvermit and Hannah Cast kept constant pressure on the goaltender.  On defense, Kelsey Burns, Sydney Jurgens and Brynne Growney squashed multiple attempts by Warwick to score.  Kate Gleason shared goal-tending duties and successfully kept Warwick from scoring.

U11 GIRLS
The Cheetahs blasted their way past the Nirvana Legacy 7 – 2. Once again, Micah Wojehowski and Lexi West were outstanding in goal while the defensive line of Katarina VanLedtje, Emma Sabini, Jessica Dwyer and Giovanna Fichera physically outplayed the Nirvana front line. Scoring was widespread for the Cheetahs with Sam Nelbach, Lilian Poling, Jillian Decker and Lauren Pinkham taking honors. Maddie Lander and Kaitlyn Preiss were relentless covering the open field and creating the offensive opportunities.

U12 GIRLS
The Predators match with Cortland Liberty Belles was an even, back and forth duel. The Predators fell behind early and fought back to tie their opponents 3-3. Mary Gallo had an outstanding game at center forward, hat tricking, scoring all three goals. Emily Gallo, Victoria Colotti, and Julia Kerr assisted her. Christa Sidoti had a solid game on defense. Julia Kerr and Kelly Moran had their best games of the season, at forward and midfield respectively. Keeper Samantha Sabini had a good match with some spectacular saves.

U13 GIRLS-CYCLONES
The Cyclones toppled the undefeated first-place North Salem Twisters 2-0. Stellar play by Rose Foody, Jessica McGowan and Olivia Tellefsen lead the Cyclone defense, which neutralized the potent Twister offense.  Keepers Stephanie Soto and Siobhan Lyons played flawlessly in goal.  Co-Captain Alex Steinman slammed home Cornwall's first goal early in the first half.  For the second goal, Judy Dianis made a perfect precision pass to Co-Captain Samantha Fowler, who made a highlight-worthy crossing pass to Co-Captain Rebecca Baumel who powered the ball into the net

U13 BOYS
The Storm tied Hyde Park 2-2. Spirited play in the second half kept the Storm competitive.  Cornwall goals by Artem Ryabov and Damon Neil.  Andrew Stein hustled all game while Chris Regan was a strong defender.  Great job by all!

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
The U11 Cheetahs girls took first place at the Ossining Halloween Classic Saturday, November 1st. The local girls cruised through their bracket outscoring their opponents 11 – 3. Competition in the tournament was from Westchester and from Manhattan. When announcing the winning team the event organizer was surprised a “team from the north would fare so well”.
