General News: Tuesday's Ballot Offers Range of Candidates

When voters go to the polls on Tuesday they will be electing a President, U.S. Congressional Representative, a State Senator, and a State Assembly member, as well as a Surrograte Judge and a Family Court Judge. There is also a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would make it easier for disabled veterans to attain civil service jobs and promotions.

The Presidential race between Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain have grabbed most of the attention this election season, but four other presidential candidates representing the Socialist Workers Party, the Party of Socialism & Liberation, the Green Party, the Libetarian Party and the Populist Party also appear on the ballot.

Obama and his running mate, Joseph Biden, are also running on the Working Families Party ticket and John McCain and his vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, appear on the Conservative Party and Independence Party line.

First-term incumbent U.S. Congressman John Hall is running on the Democratic, Working Families and Independence Party ticket, while his opponent, Kieran Michael Lalor, a former Marine, is backed by the Republican and Conservative parties.

Locally, Republican incumbents are seeking re-election to their positions in Albany.

Nine-term New York State Senator Bill Larkin is up against Lawrence Delarose, a Democrat from Washingtonville, Larkin is the candidate of the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party.

New York State Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun is facing challenger Richard Randazzo, a Democrat and former Cornwall town supervisor. The Conservative Party has endorsed Republican Calhoun while the Working Families Party stands behind Randazzo.

Stephen Hunter, a Democrat, is running against Robert Onofry for Surrogate Judge. Onofry is the candidate of the Republic, Conservative and Independence parties while Hunter, who currently holds the position, is backed by the Working Families Party.

Andrew Bivona is the lone candidate for Family Court Judge. He runs unopposed and with the endorsement of the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party.

Don't forget - If you live in the Village your polling place may have changed! You should have received a yellow notification postcard in the mail.

Call the Orange County Board of Elections at 845-291-2444. Note that their website is out-of-date!

Dunno about other machines, but the one I voted in did not list the Proposition.
