The Cornwall Community Co-op got some support from U.S. Congressman John Hall when it launched its membership drive at the Autumn Harvest Festival held in Cornwall-on-Hudson on Saturday.

Congressman Hall, who took a moment out from his re-election campaign to taste some homemade apple crisp at the festival, congratulated volunteers on the co-op’s steering committee who were busy all afternoon signing up members of the co-op.

Steering committee member Lynn Peebles says that more than fifty people became founding members of the co-op, which intends to open a market at 208 Hudson Street in the summer of 2009.  Founding members became part of a buyers’ club and on Saturday they placed orders for organic, free-range turkeys, vegetables, cheese and pies for Thanksgiving.

Peebles says that the founding members include people who have supported the idea of the food co-op since it was first announced, like Jackie Grant of the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum.  Cornwall town councilman Randy Clark and his wife, Mary, also signed on.

The food co-op is seeking to sign up 300 members by the time it opens a market next year.  The members will own a share of the business and have the right to vote on important decisions about the co-op’s operation, including the range of food and other products available for sale in the market.
